LALBAGH BOTANICAL GARDEN

 

INTRODUCTION

Lal Bagh Botanical Garden is considered to be one of the most diverse botanical garden in South Asia. It is located in the southern part of the city,the Mysore Government Botanical Gardens was the chief center of Horticulture in South India during the rule of later Mysore Wodeyars (1881-1947).

HISTORY 

 The Lalbagh is said to be inspired in design by the Mughal Gardens which were quite popular at the time of construction of Lalbagh. There are four different entry gates to Lalbagh in all the four directions.The original garden is of 40 acres which was laid down by Hyder Ali was expanded during the rule of the British Commissioners and the Wodeyars. 

 After the fall of Tipu in 1799, Lalbagh was owned by a military botanist, Major Waugh, who in 1819 gave the garden as a gift to the Governor General Marquess of Hasting. When Mark Cubbon became the Commissioner of Mysore he handed over the garden to a Horticultural Society which was formed for the first time in Bangalore in 1836.

 Hyder Ali started building the Garden of Lal Bagh in the year 1760 and his son Tipu Sulthan completed the garden.

1. Lalbagh Glass House: The glass house in Lalbagh built in 1898, is inspired from the London’s Crystal palace. The Glass House appears as a shining white monument in glass hosting a wide array of colourful flowers in the morning whereas at night it is lit up in golden light creating a view which is a treat to the eyes. It is here that the flower shows are held in the months of January and August every year. Lalbagh has around 1854 species of plants some of which are very rare and exported from different parts of the world.
